What happened in 1844? Is there an Investigative Judgment? Those who have any interest in the past Advent movement cannot be otherwise than deeply interested in the question of our disappointment. To examine this question with candor and fairness and to set forth the reasons why their expectations were not realized is the object of this work. On the day after the great disappointment of October 22, 1844, God gave Hiram Edson an insight into why Jesus had not returned the previous day. Further Bible study resulted in Adventism's teaching regarding Christ's ministry in the heavenly sanctuary. J. N. Andrews's pamphlet reflects his later study of this doctrine.
